"Madison Springs Hut, White Mts., NH" — Watercolour Painting (click image to return) |
We climbed to Madison Hut for this image on a cold, wet, windy day. Our first glimpse of the hut was this one, a welcome view with accompanying thoughts of warmth and food and a place to sleep. Ah! |
"Franconia Range Washed by Evening's Glow, White Mts. of NH" — Watercolour Painting (click image to return) |
Eagle Lake, between the Greenleaf Hut and Mt. Lafayette, adds a quiet place for the eye to rest before the beyond-belief beauty of the massive mountain. I wanted to capture that blue that only the evening light, twilight brings. The Guide Book describes this part of the ridge as a Gothic masterpiece; it suggests the ruins of a gigantic medieval cathedral. |
"Morning on Franconia Range from Greenleaf Hut" — Watercolour Painting (click image to return) |
Franconia Range, made up of Mts. Flume, Liberty, Little Haystack, Lincoln, and the highest point on the ridge, Lafayette, is a wild edge that circles west of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. The first time I hiked this rim, the rain blew horizontally and I could barely make my way. I usually take only watercolours when hiking hut to hut as they are quick to do when in alpine, arctic conditions. This painting was mostly formed before the hut crew served breakfast. I finished the painting in my studio. |
